August seems to be the hottest and driest of all the summer months, at least in Robinson, TX. The sun beats down on the earth for days; the grass turns brown and crunchy, the leaves on the trees become lifeless and wilted. Any gust of wind is like a blast from a furnace full of dust particles that irritate your eyes and sting your face. If you should be daring enough to ‘jump in the lake’ you will find no respite there either, for it will be tepid and not at all refreshing.
This relentless heat that torments nature and our bodies during this month soon begins to torment our souls as well. We grow weary, irritable and tempers start to flair. In our distress we cry out to God to please send the rain. He hears, He answers. Suddenly the grass and trees are refreshed - along with our weary souls.
Such refreshment of the soul was the purpose God placed in the hearts of the originators of Summer Rain Women’s Conference. In obedience to His call they presented the idea to the Pastor. He agreed that they should move forward with the plan. He felt this could be an important ministry for the women of First Baptist Church of Robinson as well as a tool to reach out to the women of surrounding communities.
Inspired by Brother Mike’s encouragement and the following words of Ecclesiastes 3:1; “To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven”, the women ventured to employ their first speaker and Summer Rain Women’s Conference was born. The prevalent comment heard after the conference was; “This was great! Please do it again next year!” So they did. As a result, it has become an annual event that is held on the first Tuesday of August.
Attendance that first year was predominately made up of members from our own congregation with only a small amount of visitors. However; as the word continues to spread, we are blessed each year to see the addition of many new faces. It is exciting to see visitors who have become regular attendees bringing guests with them to the conference. It is also exciting to see God allowing us to fulfill our Mission Statement ‘to unite the women of our church to reach the women of our community for Christ’.
